nursing class
wowza, what a great class we went to on saturday! it was so much better than the childbirthing class...could have had something to do with the instructor...or the fact that there were fewer couples in the room. i learned SO MUCH about nursing that i didn't know before. here are some highlights:
(disclaimer-this info. was given by a lactation consultant at the Nesting Place in Grapevine...I haven't researched it for myself yet!)

*the reason many women lose weight through breastfeeding is because the milk is formed through pulling fat from the thighs, hips, and belly during nursing...all the places most women gain weight in pregnancy; breastfeeding burns approx. 500 calories per day. (the lactation consultant did say that you can't expect to lose weight if you eat whatever you want!)
*babies who are breastfed for one year have an average IQ of 12 points higher than formula fed babies.
*most M.D.'s/pediatricians have little to no training on breastfeeding during medical school, therefore it is important to find a pediatrician who is pro-nursing if that is the route you choose to take.
*babies use a completely different sucking reflex on a bottle vs. when they are nursing. If a baby uses a bottle within the first 3 weeks of life, they have a higher chance of being unable to nurse properly because they know there is an "easier" way to get food:)!
those are just a few things i didn't know...i do realize that anything can happen...some women are unable to feed for numerous reasons, and i may be one of them! i do want to give it a valiant effort though. in class we had to practice four different holding positions with baby dolls. my preggo friend melissa stole my cute doll when i was in the bathroom before class and gave me the ugly one! i didn't find that out until after class...you better watch out girl!
6.5 school days until the students leave for summer...praise! i love them but am ready for a good break...getting more tired these days:)...

birthing class
okay, so i just realized i never posted about our eventful nine hour childbirthing class two weekends ago! here are the highlights:
*nelson had to walk out within the first 10 minutes because he was laughing so hard...when he returned the instructor asked him if he was okay and what was so funny...the rest of the day she showed an obvious disdain for him! it was hilarious!
*nelson had to wear a 35-pound belly simulator for 20 minutes.
*i had to go to the bathroom more than anyone in the room and my due date was later than everyone else's????
*we saw two adorable five-pound twins during our tour of the labor and delivery floor at baylor grapevine.
*we saw two videos; one of several natural childbirths and one of a c-section. the natural childbirthing video was of women with no clothes on who had no medication for their deliveries. talk about freaking everyone in the room out! one of the babies came out with white stuff all over it and the mother said, "that doesn't look like a baby!" nelson seemed very concerned about that scene...
*we practiced breathing techniques in several different positions but nelson and i could not seem to take it seriously. the room was completely silent with the exception of our outbursts of laughter...oh i tried so hard to stop!
*the day ended by the instructor making all of the men in the room get on the floor and pretend to push and practice breathing exercises. nelson thought this was ridiculous so he just laid there. the instructor said, "nelson, push!" nelson replied, "i'm havin' a c-section!"
that about sums it up!

Look at this adorable hospital gown! I found out that you can purchase your own labor and delivery gown for your big day! I wonder if Nelson will go for it...I figure so many pics will be taken that day that I might as well be wearing a cute gown! Anybody done this before? I need to find out if my hospital will allow it but if they say yes, you'll see me in this gown on the big day...unless I find a cuter one in the next 15 weeks! Somehow I went from working on my home study to looking at pictures of hospital gowns...mama mia...
